New funding for Revitalising Geographe Waterways

Priority actions to reduce nutrients entering Geographe waterways are set to continue with the McGowan Government announcing recently that the Revitalising Geographe Waterways program will continue for four years.

The funding is part of the new Healthy Estuaries WA program which will see $25 million rolled out across the regions to support restoration and management activities in the Peel, South West and Great Southern.

Vasse Taskforce Chair and Member for the South West Region Dr Sally Talbot says around $6.4 million is expected to be available for Revitalising Geographe Waterways, which will be implemented under the direction of the Vasse Taskforce.

“The program will builds on the success and learnings of past programs based on scientific studies, community consultation and evaluation of management actions and monitoring” Dr Talbot said.

“Priority actions will include on-ground works to reduce nutrients entering key waterways through best practice fertiliser management, riparian management, and urban nutrient reductions”.

Monitoring and science in the catchment and the Vasse Wonnerup wetlands will continue to inform the program and evaluate the effectiveness of on-ground works.

Funding will be available to implement key actions from management plans developed in the first phase of the program.

“The Vasse Taskforce will lead this component, prioritising innovative ideas that fast track water quality improvements in priority waterways and the drainage network” said Dr Talbot.

Local catchment group GeoCatch will continue to lead communication and community engagement for the program, ensuring strong partnerships and collaboration with the community and industry groups.

As a result of Revitalising Geographe Waterways and past programs, there has been a significant reduction in nutrients entering many Geographe waterways and the new funding will ensure this momentum is continued into the future.
